Why God, Family and Golf — In That Order
There is something about a clubhouse after a round of golf.
The scorecard might be sitting on the table. Someone is still talking about the putt that should have dropped on the 17th. Another person is explaining why the ball that disappeared into the trees definitely wasn't their fault.
But eventually, the conversation moves beyond golf.
You talk about work. Family. The children. What is going well. What isn't. Sometimes faith. Sometimes life. And often you realise that the best part of the day wasn't necessarily the golf at all.
That feels like the right place to begin The GFG Journal.
Welcome.
More Than Golf
I love golf.
I love the anticipation of knowing I have a round coming up. I love arriving at a course early, getting the clubs out of the car and standing on the first tee wondering which version of my golf swing has decided to turn up that morning.
But as much as I enjoy the game, golf isn't first in my life.
And it shouldn't be.
When I began thinking about what would eventually become GFG Heritage, I kept returning to three words:
God. Family. Golf.
They represent three important parts of my life, but their order matters just as much as the words themselves.
God first. Family always. Golf when we can.
In That Order.
God First
My Christian faith is not something separate from the rest of my life. It is the foundation underneath it.
I don't claim to have everything figured out. Far from it. Faith itself is a journey of learning, growing, trusting, getting things wrong and continually returning to God.
But I know where I want the foundation to be.
With Jesus.
That is why the GFG crown carries a cross at its highest point. It is deliberately above everything else.
The crown isn't there because we are kings.
It's there because He is King.
And I wanted that truth quietly woven into the identity of GFG from the beginning.
Family Always
Then comes family.
I'm blessed to be a husband and a father to two boys. As I've grown older, I've started thinking differently about what success actually looks like.
There was probably a time when success was easier to measure: career progression, money, possessions, achievements.
Those things have their place.
But increasingly, I find myself thinking about something else:
What will I leave behind?
Not simply financially, but in the values my children remember. The example they saw. The faith they witnessed. The time we spent together and the memories we created.
And family doesn't stop at our front door.
I'm also blessed with a church family at Equippers Church. These are people we worship with, serve alongside, pray with, laugh with and walk through different seasons of life with.
Community matters.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons the word Heritage became so important to me when developing this brand.
Heritage isn't simply what you inherit.
It's what you choose to pass on.
And Then There's Golf
Thankfully, after all of that, there is still room for golf.
Golf has given me some wonderful experiences.
There is something special about walking a course early in the morning when the grass is still wet, the course is quiet and there are several hours ahead of you with very little to think about other than the next shot.
Golf can also be incredibly frustrating.
One minute you're convinced you've finally worked out your swing.
Three holes later you're wondering whether selling the clubs might be a sensible financial decision.
Then you hit one beautiful shot.
And you're back.
Perhaps that's why golf fits GFG so well.
The game teaches patience.
Humility.
Discipline.
Perseverance.
And gratitude.
Some of those lessons extend far beyond the golf course.
Clothing for the Life Around the Game
When we started developing GFG Heritage clothing, I didn't want the brand to shout.
I wanted something understated.
Something you could wear for a Saturday morning round, but equally something you could still be wearing when you sit down afterwards with your family for lunch.
That's why you'll notice that our branding is deliberately small.
A crown.
A cross.
Three letters.
That's enough.
The meaning behind them is more important than their size.
We build considered, understated clothing for life on the course and the life that surrounds it — for the mornings before a round, the family that comes with you, and the quiet gratitude that grounds it all.
Conversations from the Clubhouse
And that's what I hope this Journal becomes.
Not simply somewhere we talk about clothes.
There will certainly be GFG news, new pieces we're working on and stories behind the collections.
But I also want to talk about golf.
Courses we've played.
Lessons the game teaches us.
Family.
Faith.
Life.
And perhaps occasionally the conversations that happen when the clubs have been put away and everyone is sitting around the clubhouse table.
Because sometimes the most important conversations around golf have very little to do with golf.
GFG Heritage is at the very beginning of its journey.
There is plenty still to learn, plenty still to build and, God willing, plenty of rounds still to play.
Thank you for being here at the beginning.
Welcome to The GFG Journal.
Welcome to Conversations from the Clubhouse.
God first. Family always. Golf when we can.
In That Order.
